Hewlko News - The More We Know

June has been a month of eye-opening learning on a global scale. The Black Lives Matter, Black Out Tuesday movements and protests act as pillars for cultural shifts. The more we learned, un-learned and engaged in discussion the more we realized how little we understood about systemic racism, anti-racism and then there was the gut wrenching moment when we realized that we were doing nothing to change it.

There is so much more work to be done but we are dedicated to putting in the effort, committed to active learning, engaging in further conversations and taking action that support change. Below are the three stages we have been working on;

  1. Awareness – protests

  2. Active-learning – reading books, listening to podcasts, watching shows, documentaries and having conversations

  3. Action – participating as an ally and political reform

What active-learning looks like:
We wanted to share a few resources we’ve found helpful so far.

  1. I'm Still Here: Black Dignity - In a World Made for Whiteness‎ by Austin Channing Brown. She writes, “Reconciliation is not about white feelings. It’s about diverting power and attention to the oppressed, toward the powerless. It’s not enough to dabble at diversity and inclusion while leaving the existing authority structure in place.” Listen to her podcast with Brene Brown here.

  2. A guide on anti-racism for beginners, under the leadership of Tiffany Bowden, PhD. From Layla Saad: "It is not as simple as not using racial slurs. We are socialized into white supremacy from the moment we are born. So it’s not enough to say ‘But I love black people!’. It is about completely dismantling how you see yourself and how you see the world, so that you can dismantle how white supremacy functions as an institutional and ideological system of oppression."

  3. 8:46 Dave Chapelle speaks about the murder of George Floyd, celebrity responsibility, and being Black in America.

  4. 13th is available on YouTube for FREE! From the trailer: "Combining archival footage with testimony from activists and scholars, director Ava DuVernay's examination of the U.S. prison system looks at how the country's history of racial inequality drives the high rate of incarceration in America."

  5. The Sprawl is independent local journalism here in Calgary and they put out a great podcast. Listen to this interview with Cheryl Foggo about Black life in Alberta.

Action you can take at a local level:
Some of our friends have started taking action by writing letters to help urge the Alberta Minister of Education and our MLA's to add Black Canadian History and anti-racism curriculum to Alberta K-12 Programs of Study. Learn more about how you can help with this important work at https://albertantiracismedu.carrd.co/

We'd love to hear about what you've been reading and listening to on this topic or if there are any further actions you've been taking that we should know about - please share! Send us an email at info@hewlko.com.

We also welcome all comments, suggestions and feedback on how we can be better.

Highlighting recent grads on Instagram!

Graduation looked a little different this year, but needless to say, all the grads worked so hard and their work should be celebrated. We wanted to use our platforms and connections to help spread the word on new students for hire!

Be kind and stay safe!
